Teachable Moments

Some say, some moments are teachable, however, I disagree with those unwise souls. How dare they deceive us? Every moment is teachable, but do we understand the lesson of each moment or do we rush through our days unaware?

Sadly, most of us rush through our days.

Yet we wonder why one day seems just like the other one. When we look back on our days it often feels like one long day, but it doesn’t have to.

We don’t have to avoid the lessons of the day. We can incorporate them.

How Our Best Friend Teaches Us

We can learn from a dog.

Have you ever noticed how a dog scours about sniffing one thing and the next when he is unleashed? Dogs, like most animals, are connected to Life or what some call Mother Nature or Earth.

Dogs seize every opportunity that they get to experience, discover and learn from a moment. They want to experience it, to learn from and even grow from it, but we fail to recognize the numerous benefits of engaging in such an endeavor until we have to.

What do you think?

Have you ever missed an important moment and wished for a do-over?

What’s At Stake?

The sad part of not engaging in every moment that we get to experience life on a deeper level is that we miss something, miss something or fail to realize something valuable. We miss crucial moments like things happening in the lives of our loved ones, on our jobs and in our communities.

Do you know that some marriages fail because couples complain that their partner doesn’t get them or pay attention to them anymore?

Did you know that kids who act out at school often do so because they crave their parents attention?

Did you know this “acting out” or aggressive behavior may lead to other things worst things like crime and suicide?

When we finally realize some of these things we say things such as: “When did this happen? How did this happen? Where was I at? OMG!”

Three Living Your Best Life Tips from Oprah Winfrey

  • Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure.

  • I believe that one of life's greatest risks is never daring to risk.

  • Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.

Wearing Yourself Thin

Have you ever found yourself responding to negative situations that you knew were coming, but did not pay attention to them?

Do you go around playing firefighter when you know full well you are one playing with matches?

You are wearing yourself thin and not in a good way.

Responding to a negative situation after negative situation is tiring. Living this way is what I call hard living and “hard living” is essentially, hardly living. When we are hardly living, we miss our mark.

Some of the things you might be missing include;

  • Noticing that your partner has lost a few pounds.
  • Your husband put the toilet seat down.
  • Your son is getting taller, growing more confident and when he stops listening to you, you wondering why.
  • Your daughter has a new boyfriend that you probably wouldn’t like, but you don’t notice until it’s too late and now you can’t do anything about it. Your weight has dwindled here too, but not in a good way.
  • Your assistant or colleague is doing more and more of your work, cuddling up to your boss, but you don’t see them circumventing your efforts and stealing your job.

No, you don’t see what life is trying to tell you. You don’t seize every moment. You go through every moment expecting things not to change.

Well here’s the truth: Life changes every day. Nothing is the same.

No inspirational life quote can make life better for you. You are the only one who can make life better. You can start by listening to what life tells you every day.

Remember there is a lesson in every moment.

If you want to learn life’s lessons the easy way: go sniffing around like a dog and learn something new everyday even if it smells bad.

This is your teachable moment.

Seize it, learn from it and embrace it.
